(11:47) NATIONWIDE – Hundreds of pounds of medicine was turned in on “National Drug Take Back Day”. The items ranged from prescription medication to over-the-counter drugs. According to the drug enforcement administration, 6.5 million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Authorities recommend disposing of excess medicine at Take-Back programs, because drugs that are just thrown in the trash could be retrieved, and illegally sold.
Take-Back events generally happen once or twice a year, but some police departments have year-round collection boxes. Watsonville and Carmel are 2 of those police departments. The Carmel Drug Store also takes prescriptions drugs year-round.
