Owners that want to rebuild their off-grid homes in the Last Chance area of Santa Cruz county are getting some assistance. The county has a pilot program that would allow displaced residents to rebuild dwellings that otherwise wouldn’t be up to code, The Limited-Density Owner-Built Rural Dwellings Plan reduces the amount of red tape owners need to go through. More than 1400 structures were destroyed by the 86,000 acre CZU Lightning Complex Fires, and supervisors have been working hard to create new ways to get ‘shovels in the ground’.
