Bill Would Prohibit Big, Sugary Drinks 02-20-19 15:35 DC

Large, sugary drinks would become a thing of the past under a new bill being considered by the California legislature.

The proposal would prohibit retailers from selling or giving away cups with removable lids that can hold more than 16 fluid ounces. Stores caught selling larger cups would be fined $200 for the first violation, $500 for the second violation, and $1,000 for each subsequent violation.

Experts say a 20-ounce bottle of soda contains approximately 16 teaspoons of sugar. The American Heart Association recommends adults consume no more than 5-9 teaspoons of sugar each day.

Assembly Republicans have already come out opposing the measure.
