MCO Bat Rabies Positive 10-18-18 15:00 DC

A reminder about rabies today after a bat found in the unincorporated Las Palmas area of Monterey County has tested positive for the deadly virus. Monterey County Animal Services said there was no human exposure in this incident. But an owned pet was exposed.

Public health authorities warn that every bat should be considered rabid and bats found on the ground especially so. If you find a bat, don’t touch it. If the bat is on the ground, cover it with a weighted box. Call Animal Control to remove and test the animal. Note the names of all people and animals the bat was in contact with. Even if no bite occurred.

Ksco veterinarian Dr Pete Keesling says finding rabies in our area is not a big surprise and people should stay away from any animal that is acting strangely.

It is also important to vaccinate your animals and remember that cats, cows and horses are also common rabies carriers.
