Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study of diets and sustainability. Researchers used biophysical simulation models comparing 10 different diets. They compared the vegan diet, two vegetarian (one with dairy and one with dairy and egg), four omnivorous diets (with vary amounts of meat), one low in fats and sugar, one modeled on the typical American diet. Calculating how many people could be fed with available cropland. The end result was that if everyone on earth switched to a strict vegan diet. There would not be enough available cropland to feed everyone on earth. Meaning that a vegan diet is not environmentally sustainable.

One study found that one third of patients over 70 years old and over half of patients over 85 leave the hospital more disabled than when the arrived. The story cites the specific case of a 75 year old woman who had a hospital stay after a fall. Prior to entering the hospital she was active and worked as a special education tutor. After a three week stay in the hospital and three weeks in a rehab facility. She had to quit her job, was unable to drive for months, is weaker, shaky and unable to think clearly.
