Last night, Watsonville city council members voted to allow the moratorium on evictions to expire at the end of this month….and be replaced by the state’s Safe-At-Home Guidelines which encourages landlords to freeze rents, halt evictions, waive late fees, and offer flexible re-payment plans….as well as helping their tenants to find (and get) government (and other) financial assistance.
Part of making those decisions, is because the state’s Judicial Council has effectively halted most eviction filings until 90 days after Governor Newsom lifts the state of emergency related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The fact that the Order will be expiring within the next few days, means that 6 months from that date, renters will be expected to have paid all of their outstanding rent.
