Members of the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to 3 different calls surrounding a female adult with a knife on the Water St. Bridge. When officers arrived they determined an adult woman had brandished a knife in three (3) incidents as people attempted to walk across the bridge.
Officers made an effort to contact the woman, who had entered into a tent that was upright on the walkway of the Water St. Bridge. During the initial stage of the investigation, the responding officers were unable to contact anyone who wanted to press charges against the woman. As the investigation continued, the decision was made to close the Water St. Bridge, blocking vehicle & pedestrian traffic as a means to protect the public. The Santa Cruz Fire Department and members of the Santa Cruz County Mental Evaluation Team were on scene as well.
After approximately 2.5 hours officers were able to locate a victim wanting to press charges against the woman. During negotiations with the Mental Health Liaison and members of the Santa Cruz Police Department, officers were able to safely enter the tent and place the female into custody. The female was arrested and booked for brandishing a knife, resisting and delaying a police officer.
