With rainfall this year at about 70 percent of the normal level, the Soquel Creek Water District has declared a “Water Shortage Alert.” The water district had asked customers to voluntarily reduce water usage about 5 percent between May and October, but water production was up nearly 3 percent in May and nearly 4 percent in June. The aquifers around the underlying Soquel-Aptos area have been confirmed by hydrologists as being critically low, and this puts them at risk for seawater contamination. In order to help their customers reduce water usage, the Soquel Creek Water District is providing rebates, water-wise house calls, and free water saving devices.
