CONSTRUCTION ON A NEW COMMERCIAL BUILDING IN WATSONVILLE, IS SET TO BEGIN JANUARY 6TH ON A DOWNTOWN LOT THAT HAS BEEN VACANT SINCE THE 1989 EARTHQUAKE. IT IS THE FIRST SIGN OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA SINCE THE NATIONAL RECESSION BEGAN FIVE YEARS AGO. THE TWO-STORY STRUCTURE WAS DESIGNED BY WATSONVILLE ARCHITECT ROBERT CORBETT, AND WILL BE A SISTER THE TO ROMO BUILDING, THAT RUNS ALONG SECOND STREET TO RODRIGUEZ. A TARGET DATE FOR COMPLETION IS MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY ON SEPTEMBER 15TH OF NEXT YEAR.
