(Updated at 07:18) – State health officials have updated their advisory for seafood sourced from the Monterey Bay. The California Department of Public Health warns that high levels of the neurotoxin domoic acid have been found in recreationally harvested mussels, clams, and crabs. The agency has expanded the warning to include the internal organs of scallops. Only the white meat of scallops should be consumed. Additionally, the CDPH has clarified that consumers should not eat the internal organs of commercially or recreationally harvested sardines and anchovies. The toxins are found only in the viscera of the fish, not in the meat.

The California Department of Public Health warns that high levels of the neurotoxin domoic acid have been found in recreationally harvested mussels, clams and crabs as well as sardines and anchovies. Domoic acid is produced by naturally occurring algal blooms. Researchers say the outbreak is the largest they’ve seen in 15 years.
