a 500-thousand dollar gift to u.c. santa cruz will help fund poetry-related programs for years to come. a poetry fund was established in 2002 by retired ucsc literature professor george hitchcock, which brought in about 20-thousand dollars a year from individual donors for poetry programs and events on campus. hitchcock’s partner, MARJORIE simon, has donated 500-thousand dollars and turned over control of the fund to ucsc, which will establish an endowment.
