Officials with UC Santa Cruz are warning students and teachers of a phishing scam.
The scam involves receiving an email that is pretending to originate from the university and their Career Center, student services department, or a professor offering their victims part time work or an internship.
Those who take the fake email up on such an offer are then asked to cash a check and purchase gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or money orders stating these are needed for the job.
Those who receive such an email and are unsure as to whether it is legitimate can check the email address it originates from and are encouraged to take Google’s Phishing quiz to spot out fake emails such as these.
The phishing quiz can be found online by clicking here.
