UC students will likely not see a tuition increase next year. This week, the State Higher Education Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 15, which will give $75 million to both the UC and the California State University systems to prevent tuition increases. To fund this, the Senate has proposed getting rid of the Middle Class Scholarship Program. Previously, the UC Board of Regents had approved a plan to increase tuition by up to 5 percent every year through 2019. UC President Janet Napolitano has expressed support of this bill, calling it a promising first step.
