THE U.C. BOARD OF REGENTS APPROVED YET ANOTHER TUITION HIKE TODAY (TH). BOARD MEMBERS APPROVED A 9-POINT-6 PERCENT INCREASE, WHICH AMOUNTS TO NEARLY 11-HUNDRED DOLLARS. THAT’S ON TOP OF A PREVIOUS HIKE OF 8-PERCENT FOR THE COMING YEAR. THE COMBINED TOTAL MEANS THAT THOSE ENTERING UCSC NEXT YEAR WILL PAY ABOUT 19-HUNDRED DOLLARS MORE THAN LAST YEAR. THE MOVE IS RESPONSE TO A NEW ROUND OF STATE CUTS, AMOUNTING TO A LOSS OF 650-MILLION DOLLARS. THE U.C. SYSTEM IS NOW FACING A 1-BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. CSU OFFICIALS ALSO INCREASED TUITION THIS WEEK, BY 12-PERCENT. THAT IS TO BE ADDED TO A 10-PERCENT INCREASE ALREADY APPROVED.
