UCSC Professor Develops Time-Efficient Ebola Test- 11/13/14 18:45 P.M.D.

A UCSC teacher has developed a quick Ebola test. Assistant electrical engineering professor Ahmet Ali Yanik began working on the prototype in 2010 with help from a biochemistry professor. The device uses a smaller blood sample and is faster than current tests, giving test results in about 30 minutes instead of the 10 hours or more need for standard diagnostic testing. Until the recent Ebola outbreak there hadn’t been a demand for a quicker method of testing. The device is expected to take about a year to fully develop.
