A nearly mile-long procession of law enforcement vehicles Tuesday accompanied the body of slain Santa Cruz sheriff’s deputy Damon Gutzwiller from the sheriff’s department to a nearby mortuary. An honor guard will remain with the body until a funeral service sometime next week.
Santa Cruz Sheriff Jim Hart says after the unanticipated large attendance at a weekend memorial for the deputy, that finding a suitable location for the funeral has become a challenge. Hart said officials need a location that can accommodate potentially thousands of mourners while allowing enough space for social distancing between them. Locations in both Santa Cruz and adjoining counties are being considered.
