Most California National Guard troops, who have been required to repay enlistment bonuses, won’t have to do so anymore. That’s because U.S. Secretary Of Defense Ash Carter ordered the Pentagon to stop seeking repayment of the enlistment bonuses…..unless there is evidence showing that service members “knew, or reasonably should have known” that they were not eligible to receive the money. The bonus was an incentive to serve in the military at the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan a decade ago. A vote in the House on the defense bill is expected by Friday, followed by action in the Senate next week.
