A team comprised of scientists from a variety of local institutions will conduct a study to predict when and where toxic algae blooms are likely to occur along the California Coast. The team received a a nearly 8-hundred-thousand dollar grant from the Ocean Protection Council and California Sea Grant to help fund the project. The algae blooms, known as “red tide”, is believed to have sickened or killed hundreds of seabirds in the central coast. The research team hopes to develop a model to determine when the toxic blooms would occur in the Monterey Bay.
