It’s Tarantula Mating Season, and here (in the Central Coast area) that means that spiders we rarely see will be more visible than usual. The males will be roving for the next 6 weeks or so, looking for as many females as they can mate with before they die. While the females can live up to 30 years, the males only live 6 or 7, and they have only 1 season in which to mate. In most cases a Tarantula’s venom is not toxic to humans, but the barbed hairs on their abdomens, which has an irritant on it, can cause discomfort. The most common places to find Tarantulas in this area is Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park And Pinnacles National Park.
