Major berry producers have announced a commitment to sell their products in fully recyclable packaging.
The California Strawberry Commission, members of the National Berry Crops Initiative, as well as South American exporters have all signed on to this pledge.
These berry producers plan to have sustainable packaging by 2025.
Currently, most strawberries and other fruit packaging use plastic clamshells to protect them from damage during transport.
Once the packaging issue is addressed, their labels and glue will also change as the two can cause recycling issues.
These changes in design standards for packaging will be set by the Association of Plastic Recyclers.
