The National Association of Counties is asking the Army Corps of Engineers to change how it prioritizes river levee projects.
Supervisors from Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties brought forward a motion at the group’s recent meeting asking the Corp in consider more than just the value of homes that might be flooded in making levee improvement decisions.
Santa Cruz Supervisor Zach Friend said that the Pajaro River levee, built in 1949, has been awaiting work because the homes it protects are not valuable enough to get the Corps’ attention.
Friend’s motion was approved last weekend and will be presented to the Corps of Engineers for its consideration.
