A distraught man attempted to provoke Santa Cruz police into a shoot out over the weekend. Sunday evening patrol units responded to reports of a man brandishing a gun on the 300 block of Jesse Street. At the scene officers and a family member worked to deescalate the confrontation. The man surrendered what turned out to be a pellet gun to a family member. He later said he was trying to commit suicide by cop.
