THE SALINAS CITY COUNCIL HAS PASSED AN ORDINANCE THAT REQUIRES RESTAURANTS NOT TO USE POLYSTYRENE FOOD PACKAGING. THE 6-1 VOTE MEANS THE STYROFOAM BAN WILL GO INTO EFFECT IN 180 DAYS. THAT TIME FRAME WAS DECIDED ON SO THAT RESTAURANTS HAVE the CHANCE TO USE UP THE SUPPLIES THEY CURRENTLY HAVE AND MOVE ON TO PACKAGING THAT IS MORE ECO-FRIENDLY.
ONCE THE BAN GOES INTO EFFECT, RESTAURANT OWNERS THAT VIOLATE IT COULD FACE FINES OF 100 DOLLARS PER INFRACTION.
