Two Central Coast politicians have called for an end to drift gill nets. The nets, which are typically used to catch swordfish, have been known to entangle other wildlife, including dolphins and sea otters. State Senator Bill Monning, Assemblyman Mark Stone, and three other politicians sent a letter to federal fishery managers yesterday, urging them to stop the practice. The letter proposes fisheries phase out the use of gill net gear and implement bycatch monitoring. Over 500 marine mammals have been killed or entangled by drift gill nets in the past 5 years.
