The California Department of Public Health today announced the most recent statistics on COVID-19. California now has 26,182 confirmed cases and 890 deaths.
As information on race and ethnicity is becoming more complete on reported deaths, our data shows that Blacks represent a disproportionately higher number of deaths compared to their representation in California’s population. Blacks contributed 11-percent to COVID deaths but represent only 6-percent of the state population.
Another group of heightened concern are Native Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders, although the number of deaths in this population are small and therefore limits statistical comparison. They represent 1 percent of deaths but only point-3 percent of California’s population.
As of April 15, local health departments have reported 2,974 confirmed positive cases in health care workers.
