LARGE SQUID FISHING BOATS CALLED “PURSE SEINERS” ARE CAUSING A LOT OF GRIEF FOR CENTRAL COAST FISHERMAN. THE FISHERMAN SAY THESE BOATS THAT END UP CATCHING NOT JUST SQUID BUT OTHER FISH AS WELL SCOOP UP TOO MUCH OF THEIR POTENTIAL LIVELIHOOD. THE “PURSE SEINERS” ARE BUILT IN CANADA AND TO LEGALLY REGISTER THEY MUST HOLD A CAPACITY OF LESS THAN 5 TONS. LOCAL FISHERMAN ARGUE THAT DUE TO CANADA’S FISHING REGULATIONS DIFFERING FROM THE U.S. MORE OFTEN THAN NOT THESE BOATS HOLD FAR MORE THAN 5 TONS. THE U.S. COAST GUARD IS INVESTIGATING THE ALLEGATIONS, WHICH COULD LEAD TO MILLIONS IN FINES UNDER THE JONES ACT.
