Lightning struck an oak tree last Thursday, resulting in a 66-acre vegetation fire in South Monterey County over the weekend. The blaze — nicknamed the Deer Fire — began last week, but the cool weather kept the flames from spreading. Thanks to the dryer weather on Sunday, the flames began to spread shortly after 3 p.m. on Deer Canyon Road in Parkfield. No injuries or structural damage were reported and 75 firefighters, two air-tankers, and a helicopter aided in putting out the blaze by Sunday night.
