Soquel Avenue is gridlocked this morning after a pipe broken in the demolition of the La Fonda Bridge caused a major gas leak. At 10 am a natural gas pipe was broken by the construction crew, and Soquel Avenue is currently blocked off from Capitola Road to 7th Avenue. Buildings in the area have been evacuated, including a nearby veterinary hospital. Firefighters are also on the scene. PG&E workers are currently attempting to fix the leak, but Santa Cruz and Capitola Police have asked the public to avoid driving in the area for the next few hours.
