A new study estimates that a new soda tax, would generate federal funding to prevent childhood obesity. assembly bill 669, introduced by Assemblyman Bill Monning, is predicted to raise 1.7 billion dollars statewide. The 1-cent-per-ounce tax, if adopted, could raise 9.3 million dollars in Santa Cruz County and 16.4 million in Monterey County. The bill would generate $233 per student, and send 35% of the money to schools to promote nutrition and physical activity, 35% to community initiatives to prevent overweight children, and 20% to state-run programs targeting obesity.
