The effort to split the Santa Cruz City school board into seven single-member districts is proceeding slowly and without much citizen input so far.
The shift is part of an agreement to head off a legal battle over allegations of racially-based voting in Santa Cruz.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that at least 175 California schools are marking or have changed to single-member districts already. Six drafts maps are available for review here in Santa Cruz, but interest has proven very limited.
Right now, Santa Cruz City School Board Members are elected by city residents, three by residents living outside the city, and single at-large seat elected districtwide.
