THE CITY OF SALINAS IS TO PUT A 1 CENT SALES TAX HIKE INITIATIVE ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT. THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT HAS NEARLY 2-THOUSAND REQUESTS FOR REPAIRS OF HAZARDOUS SIDEWALK REPAIRS, BUT WITH AN ANNUAL BUDGET OF 200-THOUSAND DOLLARS THE CITY CAN’T AFFORD TO MAKE ALL THE REPAIRS, AND INSTEAD HAS OFFERED RESIDENTS A 50- 50 SPLIT ON REPAIR COST TO SIDEWALKS IN FRONT OF THEIR HOMES. IF THE TAX PASSES THE FUNDS WILL BE USED FOR INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIRS.
