Not only is the use of “Sky Lanterns” not allowed in Santa Cruz county, because of their ability to start wildfires…..such lanterns are not allowed anywhere in the state of California. Although “sky lanterns” are neither considered a firework, nor a pyrotechnic device, such paper :lanterns” usually contain a small candle (or fuel cell) with a waxy flammable material…..and when the inside of the lantern heats up……the lantern can float into the air….catching things around them on fire once they come in contact with something flammable, or come down to the ground. Because these “lanterns” are capable of starting fires quite easily, there are a number of regulations that prohibit them…..and those rules have been on-the-books for almost a decade in California.
