Researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium located a sunken ship over a mile deep. Scientists had been performing an earthquake study when they came upon the outline of a sunken vessel. A remote deep sea vehicle determined the wreck was actually a barge intentionally scuttled in the bay after it had run aground near moss landing in 1982. Since then the bay has been designated as a marine sanctuary making the practice of intentionally sinking a boat illegal.
