One hundred people walked down Main Street in Watsonville on Saturday to bring attention to the issue of child sexual abuse. The 7th annual “Walk to Stop the Silence” event was organized by the Family Service Agency of the Central Coast to raise awareness for what they call an epidemic of abuse. Statistics provided by the agency suggest that before they are 18, one in six boys and one in three girls will be sexually abused. They also found that the overwhelming majority of abusers are people who are known to and trusted by those children.
