September 29, 2015: Stamps.com to Pay $4 Million for Misleading Advertising

(07:55) SANTA CRUZ, SANTA CLARA COUNTIES – A California-based postage stamp service has agreed to pay $4 million to resolve claims of false and misleading advertising. District Attorneys for both Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties investigated Stamps.com, which charges its customers a monthly service fee to purchase stamps online and print them out. The investigation found that the company offered a no-risk trial without clearly disclosing that at the trial’s end, consumers were automatically enrolled in their fee-based monthly service. Stamps.com will pay $2.5 million in penalties and $1.5 million in victim restitution. (S.G.)
