A San Jose-based company that manufactures electronics products has donated a semi-conductor machine to a ucsc researcher, who hopes to use it to aid in his studies of how to convert heat into electricity. The 4.5-million dollar machine is being given by the company Philips Lumileds, which makes light-emitting diodes, (which are known as L.E.D.s) and are alternatives to incandescent and florescent bulbs. The semi-conductor is expected to be installed in the Santa Cruz home of ucsc associate professor of engineering Nobuhiko Kobayashi.
