the “predictive policing program” utilized by santa cruz police department was named as one of the 50 best inventions of 2011 by time magazine. the program (which was developed by a professor from santa clara university and a team of researchers from u.c.l.a.), uses an earthquake aftershock model to determine where future crimes will occur. since the installation of the program, s.c.p.d. has seen a decrease in burglaries and motor vehicle thefts. the predictive policing model is now being used by the los angeles police department.
