Supporters say a ballot initiative being proposed for 2020 would raise $12 billion by raising property taxes on large corporations to support schools.
Those in favor of what’s being called the “Schools and Communities First Initiative” must gather nearly a million signatures by April 14th to gain a spot on California’s November 2020 ballot.
At a rally in Salinas yesterday (Tuesday), supporters said the measure would roll-back Proposition 13 tax protection for large businesses, without hurting small business and residential property owners.
Teachers, organized labor and some public officials have come out in support of the proposal, which could generate an estimated $100 million-a-year for schools in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.
