A veteran Santa Cruz city executive has been named the city’s new second-in-command. Laura Schmidt, who has been serving as both the city’s information technology director and as interim assistant city manager since May 31, will become the permanent assistant city manager on Monday. She will earn $207,000-a-year in the new position.
