SC Unemployment Expected to Top 19% 04-16-20 06:23 DC

A new report from the University of the Pacific says Santa Cruz County is facing a 19.3-percent unemployment rate next month (May).

The university said it expects the 25,480 jobs — 26% of all nonfarm payrolls in Santa Cruz County will be lost

More than 9,400 of those jobs are expected to be lost in the county’s food-service industry, representing 78% of all food-service jobs.

But the largest proportional job loss could hit personal care and service workers. These include housekeepers, childcare workers, fitness trainers, barbers, and hairstylists. Those jobs in Santa Cruz County could be cut by 86%, or 2,360 workers, by next month, according to the University of the Pacific report.
