The famous Santa Cruz Trolley will soon be replaced by an electric shuttle. The “Downtown Beach Trolley Goes Electric Program” will pay for two zero-emission shuttles, funded by a grant of $171,510 from the Monterey Bay Air Resources District (MBARD), Clean Air Management Program.
The city expects to have the first shuttle on the streets by August with the second following before year end.
The shuttle will seat 16 people and has two wheelchair accessible seats.
City officials said the existing Santa Cruz trolley has proven too expensive to operate and ridership has been declining.
