Santa Cruz city leaders are slated to discuss the existence of illegal housing units during it’s City Council meeting this evening. The city is considering a Rental Inspection Program which would prohibit “unsafe” housing units that have turned into a health threat. The Rental Inspection Program would apply to ALL rental units and would be paid for by a fee of $6 per month. During the first 3 years of the program, the city would inspect units with known violations, while everyone else would self-certify their property. After 3 years, the city would start inspecting units that had been previously self-certified, ongoing inspections would take place every 5 years following the 1st inspection.
