A SANTA CRUZ ORGANIZATION SENT A REDWOOD SAPLING INTO SPACE ON WEDNESDAY. THE NEXT GROUP USED A WEATHER BALLOON TO SEND THE SAPLING ALONG WITH G-P-S TRACKING DEVICES AND VIDEO CAMERAS, 18.5 MILES ABOVE THE EARTH INTO OUTER SPACE WHERE THE BALLOON BURST AND A PARACHUTE OPENED. THE SAPLING WAS PICKED UP 5 MILES OFF THE COAST. THE LAUNCH REQUIRED PERMITS FROM THE CITY AS WELL AS THE F-A-A.
