What’s been called “Privates Beach” in Santa Cruz may soon be open to everyone. Santa Cruz County and the Opal Cliffs Recreation District have reached an agreement that gives the public access to both a park and the adjacent beach.
The district had been fighting to keep the facilities closed. The park district says it will apply for a new coastal development permit that includes a 6-foot retractable gate that will be open during daylight hours and free to the public.
Paid keycards and the gate attendant will be going away. Plans call for the public gate to be installed by Memorial Day 2019.
