A meeting was held last night in the Live Oak area of Santa Cruz regarding a plastic bag pan. Several environmental non-profits were on hand to talk with residents about the impact of plastic bags on the community and the environment. The proposed single-use bag reduction ordinance would ban all plastic bags at checkout in retail stores in unincorporated Santa Cruz County and would charge customers a small fee to use a paper bag. An environmental impact report is expected to be released in the next few weeks and a 30-day public comment period will follow. The ordinance could then go to the Santa Cruz County board of supervisors by April and if approved, would take effect 6 months later.
