a hearing has been scheduled by the santa cruz county board of supervisors to discuss a proposed plastic bag ban in the county. the ordinance, (which was first introduced nearly a year and half ago), WOULD PROHIBIT THE USE OF PLASTIC TO-GO BAGS AT RETAILERS. A FEE OF 10 CENTS WOULD BE IMPOSED FOR THE USE OF PAPER BAGS, AND THAT FEE WOULD INCREASE TO25 CENTS ONE YEAR AFTER THE ORDINANCE GOES INTO EFFECT. THE LAW WOULD AFFECT THE NEARLY 500 RETAILERS IN THE COUNTY, WITH ESTIMATES OF 43 MILLION PLASTIC BAGS BEING DISTRIBUTED EVERY YEAR. THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS IS SET TO DISCUSS THE BAN AT THEIR MEETING AT 9 A.M. TODAY, ON THE 5TH FLOOR OF THE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY GOVERNMENTAL BUILDING.
