A Santa Cruz native was inducted into the International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame recently. World re-known surfboard shaper, 72-year old Johnny Rice pioneered the art of shaping world-class surfboards for over 50 years. Rice, who was among the era when surfers were known for maneuvers like the “Hang-10” and “Cheater-5”, joined the craft of shaping when boards were made of redwood and balsa, and was among the first shapers to carve today’s foam boards. Rice is the 1st Northern California inductee.
