The Santa Cruz Harbor is warning swimmers and surfers of an underwater, unsecured, dredge pipe hazard near the shore area between 5th and 6th Avenue. This pipe is approximately 40 feet in length and 10 inches in diameter, visible at the water’s surface at some tides. An additional warning is advising mariners to beware of a hazard located on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Harbor’s entrance. This hazard is a steel, diamond shaped buoy attached to a 2,000 lb. anchor marking a dredge disposal pipeline. Recent storms have altered the length of the chain and the buoy is sometimes not visible during high tides. It is located on the eastern edge of the navigable channel approximately 50 yards S/E of the top if the east jetty. Mariners are advised to avoid the area of this hazard when transiting the harbor entrance. The Port District is in the process of removing both hazards.
