An inmate at the Santa Cruz County Jail is facing murder charges in Hayward. 24 year old Sydney Megan Whalen was arrested in Santa Cruz for robbery the day after a July 2017 homicide in a Hayward motel. Whalen is also linked to the stabbing of a Mercury News reporter. DNA linked Whalen to the murder in December of 2017. She will face murder charges in Santa Clara County following the conclusion of a robbery trial in Santa Cruz County
