RUNNERS OF THE WHARF TO WHARF WERE SUBJECTED TO SMALL CLOUDBURSTS OF RAIN YESTERDAY. THE SLIGHTLY DAMP CONDITIONS WERE WELCOME BY MOST CONTESTANTS. THE WHARF TO WHARF RACE STARTS AT CLIFF AND BEACH STREETS IN SANTA CRUZ AND MAKES ITS WAY 6 MILES TO THE CAPITOLA WHARF. THE 1ST RACE WAS RUN IN 1973 AND OVER THE YEARS HAD TO BE LIMITED TO 16-THOUSAND RUNNERS. THE EVENT BRINGS IN AN ESTIMATED 8 MILLION DOLLARS TO LOCAL BUSINESSES. THE RACE ORGANIZERS DONATE ABOUT 4 MILLION DOLLARS TO YOUTH SPORTS AND RUNNING EVENTS.
